With a long history in serving the interests of the professional wholesale financial markets community, аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÙÍø (аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÙÍø FMA) has witnessed several events that have impacted the global financial services industry since the establishment of our Association in 1955. Throughout this time, аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÙÍø FMA members (with membership being one of our core values), currently from 60 аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÙÍø National Associations, have adapted very well to the ever-changing conditions of financial markets and, for that, we believe that the ongoing development of our remaining core values (education and ethical conduct) have been, are now and will always be, instrumental.
However, аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÙÍø FMA does not serve only its members… our Association is dedicated to the continuous promotion and implementation of good market practices, market skills and industry knowledge for all individual market participants, as these are fundamental tools that help them be better prepared to face the many and variable daily challenges.
As we reach the end of the 1st quarter of 2023, markets remain volatile and we have observed recent events that are influencing the structure of the whole financial services industry, not just that of the related markets. It is natural that the minds of market players are currently focussed on developments that are impacting those markets and the industry as a whole. аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÙÍø FMA remains a solid supporter of the work being undertaken by regulators and related authorities that endeavour to promote fairness, integrity, and competitiveness in financial markets and the behaviour of its participants.
Nevertheless, we believe that, in these challenging times, all institutions, regardless of size, and from all sectors of this global industry (buy and sell side), should be considering enhancements to their corporate financial markets educational and CPD (Continuing Professional Development) programmes, both with regard to adherence to good market practices and completion of the learning activities that aim to increase an individual employee’s technical competence. These are the fundamental elements that underpin an individual market participant’s ongoing professional development.
аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÙÍø FMA, through its comprehensive educational programme, is well placed to support the financial markets industry withstand the challenges that are being faced today:
• Our globally acknowledged, portable and professional exams enhance career prospects, improve job performance and set benchmarks within the industry, as they target foreign exchange, fixed income, money markets, derivatives, market structures, ethical conduct and risk management, for front, middle and back-office staff;
• Our ELAC Portal (for E-Learning, Attestation and Certification) allows all market participants to demonstrate their individual proof of adherence to relevant industry Codes of good market practices (such as the FX Global Code, Global Precious Metals Code and UK Money Markets Code), and it is a fitting solution to address operational risk.
Specifically, аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÙÍø FMA is pleased to work closely with the relevant stakeholders of these Codes, as they are developed by the industry with an aim to serve the industry’s practitioners. Therefore, we believe this collaborative engagement facilitates ongoing development of, and global adherence to, those guidelines for good market practices. Additionally, we consider that widespread adoption of these Codes by the industry should improve market structure and market stability.
In all market conditions, аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÙÍø FMA will continue working towards the development of its educational tools (currently delivered in over 120 countries) and, for that purpose, we are extremely thankful for the solid and constant assistance of our members and stakeholders.
